2016 Family Gift Guide

(This post contains affiliate links.)

As usual, we are going the frugal route for Christmas. I make the majority of my Christmas gifts and will be posting on some of my favorite DIY ideas soon. However, with so many family members asking for ideas, I thought I would share some Christmas present recommendations with you for different ages. Though keep in mind, most of these are products that we (Mitch, myself, and my 19-month-old daughter) love. Enjoy our 2016 family gift guide!

1. The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name
I’ve recommended this before, but I will keep on recommending it because it is an all-time favorite in our home! The writing, art, and overarching message of Jesus throughout the Bible make it our go-to family devotional.

2. Mega Blocks/Legos
Rebekah received these last Christmas from her grandma. She was mildly interested at the time (she was 8 months). However, she recently rediscovered them, and now she is obsessed. Mitch and I love building teetering towers and castles with her. She loves the act of creating, and we love that it encourages fine motor skills. These go on sale this time of year, making them an excellent Christmas gift. Amazon currently has a great deal on Mega Bloks Big Building Bag, 80-Piece .

3. Baby Stella
I’d never heard of Baby Stella. But apparently, it was quite the rage last year. My aunt and cousin scoured the internet to find one for Rebekah. She loves her Baby Stella. Granted she loves baby dolls in general. But Baby Stella is a great “first doll” because she is baby safe and soft. Though she comes with a little magnetic pacifier. It is cute and fun, but I did take it away for awhile because I was paranoid about the tiny magnet.

4. Toddler Safe Magnets
Rebekah loves magnets. We have to make sure the only ones she has access to are safe. These Melissa and Doug dress up magnets look safe and like a ton of fun! Rebekah has something similar that she plays with on the fridge that I picked up at a garage sale, but I’d be interested in getting her a nicer set like this Melissa & Doug Magnetic Dress-Up Play Set .

5. Lilla Rose Hair Clips
Lilla Rose offers my favorite hair clips and accessories, hands down! When I switched to embracing my natural curl and wearing my hair down more, I quit wearing them as often. But I always clip back a small section of hair. Well, I realized a few days ago that the XXS flexi hair clip is perfect for this task! And it holds better than my usual bobby pins. I feel classy and cute when I wear it. 😉 I am also a huge fan of their adjustable hair bands. As someone who has trouble keeping typical headbands from sliding off my head, this saves me the embarrassment of having to yank my headband back into place over and over. These hold AND are super elegant and comfortable. U-Pins are amazing if you have long hair and like to wear your hair in a bun or half bun. Lilla Rose hair products are not only beautiful, but durable. Plus, they come in dozens of cute styles that work with any hair type. Their Black Friday sale began on Friday and ends Monday, November 28th at midnight. Everything is at least 20% off, plus 20% off new releases, 30-50% off select styles, 60% off retiring styles, and if you select it, free shipping for orders over $75.

6.  Audible Gold Digital Membership
This recommendation comes from my husband Mitch–though I love it as well! He enjoys listening to podcasts or Audible audio books on his commute via Bluetooth, while walking our dog, and on road trips. He enjoys reading, but he is an audible learner and relishes listening to books. We first tried out Audible via a free trial when we were newlyweds. We listened to all the Hunger Games books together before bed–it was so much fun! Now he has an actual subscription and loves it. Audible has a fantastic selection!

7. Board Games and Card Games
Whether you have a board game fanatic in the house (like my husband), or you just want a gift the whole family can enjoy–this is a great time of year to buy board games. They can be a pricey investment, but they often go on sale around the holidays. We have added many to our collection over the past few years. Some favorites (many of these co-op/work together games) include Carcassonne , PandemicCastle PanicKing of Tokyo, and Sushi Go! . Wits & Wagers Family Edition is also on my personal wishlist for Christmas. I’ve heard it is an excellent family game. I also bought up three copies of Cloud Dungeon–a creative and fun papercraft game created by our friend Andrew–for friends and family.

8. Contigo Coffee Mugs and Water Bottles
Many of our serious coffee-drinking friends rave about the Contigo SnapSeal Byron Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug and Contigo water bottle. Apparently they are completely leak proof because of their vacuum seal. Which, if you have ever had a travel mug leak coffee on you in the car on your way to church or work, you understand why this is a wonderful feature! They are also known to keep coffee hotter for longer. As a very slow coffee drinker, this is important to me. AND this weekend is one of the cheapest times of year to buy them. If you have a lovely pregnant wife–treat her to a nice water bottle to keep her hydrated. This may or may not be a hint for my husband. . . . 😉

9. The Porterbox
I discovered Porterbox through Instagram. It was love at first sight. Caley Porter’s scripture jewelry is beautiful. Whether you want to speak blessing over a teen girl in your life, or bless a new mama, grandma, teacher, or encourage a mama wading through infertility or miscarriage grief, there are beautiful options for all. Caley runs an Etsy store. She is running a sale through Cyber Monday in honor of being a small business. Receive 20% off when you use the code SHOPSMALL at checkout. (I am not an affiliate for her, I just love her stuff!)

10. Redeeming Beauty Mineral Makeup
I like to refer to this as my “makeup on a mission”. It is also a small business. Redeeming Minerals is owned by Emily, a woman on a mission to create toxin and filler-free mineral makeup of the highest quality. And she strives to remind women that beauty is more than skin deep. I don’t typically wear much makeup–but I love Redeeming Beauty Makeup for when I do. It is light and velvety, and Emily offers $1 foundation samples for order. This was very important to me since I always seem to purchase the wrong tone of foundation. Plus, she is offering $10 off for new customers! P.S. Her products make great stocking stuffers.

11. Seasonal Meal Planner
This item is on my wishlist. I love to plan. And my mind naturally organizes and categories much in my life by season. It makes sense to do so with meal planning as well because buying produce and ingredients that are in season saves money. I really love Natasha Red’s designs. But they are selling out fast!

12. The Book of Coloring
You can read all about what makes this unique in a world of billions of coloring books in my review. But trust me. It is epic. It would also make a great gift for a teenager!

  1. Oooh, such a great guide! I am looking forward to you posting your DIY gifts this year, because I need some inspiration. 🙂 I love the Melissa and Doug dress up set, I feel like I need that for my fridge! I have always paper dolls, and this seems to be a magnetic paper doll. So fun! We have that contiga travel mug, and it really is spill-proof! Which is good, because I am kind of a klutz with my coffee. I, also, love the porterbox jewelry and mineral makeup. My goodness. I feel like my own Christmas list has doubled while reading these recommendations!

    • I am totally a klutz with coffee too! And so many mugs leak and dribble something awful. I am also notoriously slow at drinking coffee . . . Yes, Rebekah LOVES all things dress up and she loves playing with magnets! Glad I could add to your list! 🙂
